Trojans Take Two from Winston-Salem State

ANDERSON, S.C.-The Anderson University softball team finished up its a six game road swing with a doubleheader sweep winning game one, 6-5 and game two, 11-1 (6 innings) over nonconference opponent Winston-Salem State on Sunday afternoon at Twin City Field.

NOTES
• The Trojans improve to 27-7 overall while winning their fifth straight game.
• Winston-Salem State drops to 7-19 overall.

NOTABLES
• Sophomore Kasey Grant led the Trojans on the day going 4-for-8 including a triple and two RBI.
• Senior Courtney Czentnar went 3-for-7 with a home run, two stolen bases and three runs scored.
• Freshman Mattie Hamilton also batted 3-for-7 with a double, a home run and four RBI.
• Freshman Meghan Majeski picked up three hits and a stolen base for the Black and Gold.
• Senior Augie Pena and sophomore Michaela Smith each added two hits including a double. Pena collected two RBI while Smith crossed the plate twice.
• Junior Cailah Niles blasted her eighth homer of the year.

PITCHING
Junior Randee Bettis got the nod in game one pitching three innings giving up five hits and four runs. Bettis was lifted in favor of senior Lauren Rudesheim (10-3). Rudesheim gave up four hits and one run in four innings of work on her way to her 10th win of the season.

Winston-Salem State's Mercedes Hargett (5-12) suffered the loss giving up eight hits while striking out six Trojans.

GAME 1
Anderson 6, Winston-Salem State 5

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Winston-Salem State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after one inning of play.
• The Rams held the Black and Gold scoreless in the first two innings of play.
• Anderson briefly tied the game in the top of the third inning on Niles two-run shot scoring junior Trudi Shuman who reach on a hit-by-pitch.
• WSSU quickly took the lead again using a two-run bottom of the third inning, 4-2.
• The Trojans were able to push across two more runs of their own in the top half of the fourth. Czentnar and sophomore Breanna Hagerty each singled with Pena's double scoring both to knot the game up a four apiece.
• The Rams were able to take the lead again scoring one run after their half in the fourth inning using three hits and an error, 5-4.
• Anderson once again tied the game at 5-5 after Grant ripped a triple later scoring on a double to the left side by Hamilton.
• The Trojans were able to score the game-winner in the top of the sixth inning. Smith ripped a one-out double while Majeski kept the inning alive with a 2-out infield single. Smith was able to score on a misplayed ball by the Ram infield giving AU the 6-5 advantage.
• Rudesheim settled in only allowing one hit over the final three innings of play to secure the win.

GAME 2
Anderson 11, Winston Salem State 1

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Anderson took the early 1-0 lead after the first inning with Grant reaching on a single up the middle moving to second on a misplayed ball by the centerfielder. Hamilton ripped a two-out single scoring Grant from second.
• The Trojans added two more runs in the top of the fourth on a solo shot by Hamilton and a run scored by Czentnar utilizing her single, a stolen base and an error to score the third run of the game.
• After holding the Rams scoreless through three inning of play, WSSU was able to cross the plate once in the bottom of the fourth inning, 3-1.
• The Black and Gold score another run in the top of the fifth before blowing the game wide open scoring seven runs in the top of the sixth, 11-1.
• Pena's only blemish came in the one run fourth inning pitching a one-hit gem while striking out 10.

PITCHING
Trojan hurler, Pena (12-2) faced 19 batters giving up just one hit while striking out 10.

ANDERSON STAT OF THE DAY
With the three doubles on the day, the Trojans have equaled the total doubles hit for all of the 2016 season with 47.

UP NEXT
Anderson returns home to host South Atlantic Conference opponent Mars Hill on Wednesday. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 4 p.m.
