SPARTANBURG, S.C. – With three runners finishing ninth, 10th and 11th, respectively, the Anderson men's cross country team finished second at the 26th South Atlantic Conference Championships, which were hosted by the Trojans on the Milliken Research Center course.
Queens University of Charlotte saw six runners finish in the top seven spots and the Royals won their second straight and third overall South Atlantic Conference Championship, Saturday morning. Queens, ranked seventh nationally and at the top of the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Southeast Region Poll, outdistanced Anderson and Wingate for the title. The Trojans were tabbed fifth in the latest USTFCCCA regional poll, while Wingate was ranked ninth.
The Royals' Daniel Wallis covered the 8K course in a time of 24:34.0 to claim individual honors, while Anderson's Logan Horning captured Freshman of the Year honors with a ninth-place finish in a time of 25:33.89.
Horning claimed ninth place in a time of 25:33.9, while sophomore Ben Clark was just behind in 10th place in a time of 25:52.9 and garnered Second-Team All-SAC honors for the second straight year. Sophomore Weston Hutto (25:55.6) collected Second-Team All-Conference accolades after finishing in 11th place. The Lexington, S.C., native garnered Honorable Mention honors last year.
Freshman Thomas Sutcliffe (26:25.3) and sophomore Phillip Quillen (26:38.4) finished 26th and 31st, respectively. Sophomore Joey Teachout crossed the finish line in 35th place in a time of 26:49.3, with freshman Noah McLain posting a time of 26:59.4 and claiming 38th place. Sophomore Matthew Burgess was just off his personal-best time and finished 39th in a time of 27:00.8.
Freshman Derek Hildebrand (27:05.8) and junior Luke Horne (28:213.3) rounded out the Trojan effort in 44th and 66th place, respectively.
Anderson is slated to get back on the course in two weeks at the NCAA Southeast Region Championships, which will be hosted by North Georgia in Oakwood, Ga. The Trojans claimed third place at the Nighthawk's Invitational in a preview of the regional course in late September.
