Men’s Track and Field Picked Fifth in Preseason SAC Poll

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Queens has been picked to defend its South Atlantic Conference Men's Indoor Track & Field Championship title in a vote by the league's head coaches, as announced by the conference office Monday afternoon. The Royals picked up the maximum 10 top votes and received 110 points from the panel.

Wingate did not receive a first-place vote but placed second in the poll with 99 points. Lenoir-Rhyne garnered one top vote and claimed third place in the poll with 91 points, with Carson-Newman grabbing the No. 4 position behind 84 points. Anderson rounded out the top five with 65 points.

Tusculum landed in the No. 6 spot with 57 points and Coker was just behind at No. 7 with 52 points. Catawba earned 47 points to come in at No. 8, while Lincoln Memorial finished at No. 9 with 45 points. Mars Hill picked up 38 points to rank 10th and Newberry rounded out the poll with 27 points.

The 2019-19 South Atlantic Conference Indoor Track and Field season marks the second year for the sport in the South Atlantic Conference.

Freshman Logan Horning and Junior Jordan Anderson were named to the league's "Athletes to Watch" list.

The Trojans captured seventh place at the 2017-18 SAC Indoor Championships, with Anderson helping lead the 4x400 meter relay team to an eighth-place finish. The native of Greenwood, S.C., also brought home 18th place in the 400 meter run.

The distance medley squad, made up of Matthew Burgess, Robert Jones, Cameron Owens-Hunter and Phillip Quillen also posted a strong sixth-place finish, while Ben Clark (third), Joey Teachout (10th) and Weston Hutto (13th) all shined in the 5,000 meter run.

After beginning the indoor season at the JDL Kick-off Classic in December, the Trojans are slated to get back in action on Jan. 18-19, at South Carolina's Gamecock Inaugural.

The 2019 SAC Indoor Track and Field Championships will take place on Feb. 23-24 at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C.
