Women’s Track and Field Fourth after Day One of SAC Indoor Championships; Men are Eighth

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. –The Anderson University women's track and field team is fourth, while the Trojan men are eighth following day one of the 2019 South Atlantic Conference Indoor Championships, which was held Saturday at the JDL Fast Track indoor track and field facility.

Queens, the defending champion on the women's side, leads the nine-team field after the first day, with Lenoir-Rhyne holding the second spot. Wingate, last year's runner-up, is third, with Anderson in the fourth slot. Carson-Newman, Catawba, Mars Hill, Tusculum and Newberry round out the field.

Queens is also the defending champion on the men's side and leads the 10-team field over Lenoir-Rhyne. Wingate and Carson-Newman are tied for third, while Catawba is fifth heading into Sunday's final day of action. Tusculum, Newberry, Anderson, Lincoln Memorial and Mars Hill round out the men's field.

In the women's mile prelims, Olivia Rish qualified for Sunday's finals with a 10th-place finish in a personal-best time of 5:25.83, while Lydia Gambrell slashed her personal-best by nearly 12 seconds and crossed the finish line in 11th place in a time of 5:31.78. Maddie Buddenberg crossed the finish line in 19th place in a time of 6:06.24.

Kamryn Osterbind qualified for the women's 800 meter finals on Sunday after notching a time of 2:25.98 and finishing sixth in Saturday's prelims. Natalie Ardis set a new career-best time of 2:45.35 en route to a 27th-place finish.

Trojan freshman Katharine Landry notched a career-best time of 10.05 and finished 10th in the women's 60 meter hurdle prelims. Olivia Evans finished fourth (18:24.32) in the finals of the women's 5,000 meter run, with Melea Sangl notching a personal-best time of 18:54.20 and claiming seventh place. Hannah Beach (19:15.82) finished in 11th place.

The Trojan women's distance medley relay team, consisting of Gambrell, Madison Seay, Osterbind and Rish finished fourth in Saturday's finals, while JoLyn Copeland finished sixth in the finals of the weight throw with a toss of 14.92 meters.

In the men's mile prelims, Joey Teachout claimed 13th place in a time of 4:34.65, while Luke Horne notched a time of 4:43.71 and finished 17th. David Rolon (4:55.80) and Hayden Tuten (4:57.13) each posted career-best times, while finishing 22nd and 23rd, respectively.

Jordan Anderson finished ninth in the men's 400 meter prelims in a time of 51.80, with Matt Hobbs taking 31st place in a time of 54.65. Anderson also finished 28th in the men's 60 meter prelims in a time of 7.31, with Hobbs claiming 26th in the men's 200 meter prelims in a time of 24.03.

Cameron Owens-Hunter (2:00.19) finished 10th in the men's 800 meter prelims, while Matthew Burgess (2:03.08) claimed 14th place. AU sophomore Robert Jones finished 20th in the men's 60 meter hurdle prelims in a personal-best time of 9.26.

Noah Mclain (16:18.65), Thomas Sutcliffe (16:21.94) and Brandon Wilson (16:28.97) finished 17th, 18th and 19th, respectively in the finals of the men's 5,000 meter run. The men's distance medley relay squad, made up of Horne, Anderson, Owens-Hunter and Philip Quillen finished fifth in a time of 10:44.86.

Anthony Aleruchi finished 13th in the finals of the weight throw with a toss of 13.73 meters, while Connor Wheatley posted a personal-best toss of 13.41 meters and finished 15th. Evan Francis claimed 23rd with a distance of 11.05 meters.

The pentathlon and heptathlon segments were held on Feb. 12 as part of the Queens University Combined Events, where the teams competed in an open event to collect championship points. On the women's side, Queens opened Saturday's events with 18 points, Lenoir-Rhyne was second with 13 points, Anderson was third with five points and Tusculum was fourth with three points

Landry claimed 12th place in the women's pentathlon. The Ashland, Mass., native posted a time of 10.19 in the 60 meter hurdles, reached a height of 1.33 meters in the high jump, tossed the shot put a distance of 10.48 meters, reached a distance of 4.63 meters in the long jump and notched a time of 2:35.70 in the 800 meters.

On the men's side, Queens earlier earned 31 points, Lenoir-Rhyne was second with five points and Wingate was third with three points.

Jones finished 15th in the men's heptathlon after posting a time of 7.73 in the 60 meter dash, and a time of 10.08 in the 60 meter hurdles. The Easley, S.C., native reached a distance of 5.50 meters in the long jump, tossed the shot put 9.04 masters, reached a height of 1.56 meters in the high jump and 2.55 meters in the pole vault and posted a time of 3:01.72 in the men's 1,000 meters.

The final day of the 2019 South Atlantic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships are slated to get underway, Sunday at 10 a.m. with the men's high jump.
