Emmanuel Edges Trojans; 5-4

ANDERSON, S.C. Anderson University women's tennis was edged out, 5-4, by nonconference opponent Emmanuel in its final fall season match on Friday at the AU Tennis Complex.

 With the setback, the Trojans will head into the spring competition 1-1 overall while Emmanuel moves to 1-2 overall.

 The Black and Gold took a 2-1 advantage following the doubles round. Juniors Laura Dean and Jacqueline Olivia defeated Fantine Botella and Chloe O'Conner, 8-5 in the No. 1 flight while Senior Ivey Welborn and junior Jennifer Holcombe won a close match, 8-7(6) in the No. 3 slot over Pearllan Cipriano and Victoria Silva. Emmanuel was able to avoid the doubles sweep by winning the No. 2 spot. The Lions Maria Raich and Katharina Kiderlen won 8-5 over sophomore Delaney Wiggins and freshman Cameron Blanchard.

 Emmanuel regrouped during the singles portion winning four of the six matches to claim the victory. AU's Dean continued her solid play defeating Botella 6-3, 6-1 while Blanchard won over Silva 7-6, 6-4.

 Anderson begins its spring season when it travels to Southern Wesleyan on Feb. 2. First serve is slated for 3:30 p.m.
