ROCK HILL, S.C. - A strong showing in doubles action lifted the second-seeded Anderson University women's tennis team past No. 3 seed Tusculum, 5-1, in the semifinals of the 2012 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championship Friday morning at the Rock Hill Tennis Center.
The Trojans took an early 3-0 lead by sweeping the doubles points, with the freshman tandem of Clair Larkin and Lindsay Gregory edging Tusculum's Courtney Conley and Taylor Patterson, 8-6 at second doubles to start the action. Anderson's Avery Owens and Bianca Chequin followed with an 8-4 win over the Pioneers' Megan Buckmaster and Kate Hutchinson at third doubles, while senior Shelby Anderson and Camie Beaulieu-Brunet teamed up to complete the sweep by defeating Holly Verner and Katelyn Doss, 8-5 at the No. 1 slot.
Owens kept the momentum going for the Trojans, earning her second win of the day with a straight set, 6-1, 6-1 win past Conley at No. 3 singles, while Verner earned Tusculum's first win of the day by defeating Beaulieu-Brunet, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, but Larkin posted her second victory of the morning with a hard-fought 6-2, 6-4 win past Doss at No. 2 singles.
Anderson improved to 12-8 on the season, while Tusculum fell to 17-4.
The Trojans move on to face top-seeded Wingate in the championship match Saturday, with first-serve slated for 9 a.m.
