Women’s Tennis Competes at USTA/ITA Southeast Regionals

SUMTER, S.C. - Anderson University's Avery Owens, Camie Beaulie-Brunet, Clair Larkin and Lauren Trumbull each earned wins at the 2011 USTA/ITA Southeast Regionals, hosted by Francis Marion over the weekend at the Palmetto Tennis Center.

Owens, a sophomore from Clinton, S.C., ousted UNC Pembroke's Shelby Bickel, 6-1, 6-0, before falling in the round of 16 to Francis Marion's Jitka Gavdunova, 6-1, 6-0.

Beaulieu-Brunet outlasted Erskine's Tessa Rheault, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, in Friday's opening round before dropping a 6-0, 6-2 decision to Francis Marion's Tereza Baranova.

Larkin advanced by topping Pembroke's Leigh Anne McAfee, 6-3, 6-0, before falling, 6-1, 6-0, to Armstrong Atlantic's Aleksandra Filpovski.

In doubles' action, Beaulieu-Brunet and Larken teamed up to defeat Georgia College's Leah Pridgeon and Lisa Setyon, 8-2, in second round action before dropping an 8-1 decision to North Georgia's Nela Handac and Audrey Marlete.

Owens and Trumbull advanced to the semifinals with an 8-0 blanking of Mount Olive's Particia's Guedes and Noelia Mora and an 8-6 win past Erskine's Nikki Miller and Abby O'Reilly Saturday afternoon. The duo moved into the semis by defeating North Georgia's Laura Chapman and Juliana Moscoso Chiang, 8-2 on Sunday, but were unable to advance to the title match after retiring while trailing Young Harris' Stormy Dvorak and Lina Parra, 2-1.

Anderson will get back on the courts Thursday, Oct. 6, when the Trojans visit Belmont Abbey.
