Second Half Goal Lifts UNC Pembroke over Anderson

Second Half Goal Lifts UNC Pembroke over Anderson

ANDERSON, S.C. - After holding UNC Pembroke scoreless for the first 51 minutes, Anderson University women's soccer were unable to maintain the shutout as the Braves earned a narrow 1-0 victory over the Trojans in nonconference action on Saturday afternoon at Trojan Stadium.

With the setback, Anderson falls to 1-1-1 on the young season while UNC Pembroke moves to 2-1.

The Braves posted 18 shots for the afternoon compared to Anderson's nine with UNC Pembroke narrowly holding a 5-4 advantage with shots coming on goal. Freshmen Lexi Williams and Cassidy Wheaton paced the Trojans with two shots. Following the tandem, Lexxi Longmore, Lauren Allan, Havon Ashy and Gabbie Fleming all tallied a shot on goal.

In goal, junior goalkeeper Abby Helm corralled four saves matching UNC Pembroke's Gina Ryan's total.

In the 51st minute, UNC Pembroke's Stacy Scott fired a shot from close range. Anderson's defender made an attempt to clear the ball, however it deflected into the back of the net for an "own goal".

The Black and Gold regrouped and were able to attack on several different occasions, however the Braves stingy defense held off the Trojans.

The Trojans return to action on Wednesday when they host Peach Belt Conference opponent North Georgia. Kickoff from Trojan Stadium is scheduled from 5 p.m.
