Women’s Golf Claims Third Straight AU Invitational Title

ANDERSON, S.C. – A pair of 3-over-par 75s lifted junior Anna Freeman to her first career victory, as the Aiken, S.C., native led the Anderson University women's golf team to its' third straight AU Invitational title, Tuesday on a 5,863 yard, par-72 Cobb's Glen Country Club layout.

"We are really proud of both the men's and women's teams," said Anderson head coach Danny Neal. "The women continue to dominate events - winning the team championship and having four players make the all-tournament team, not to mention Anna Freeman being the low medalist. All-in-all a really strong start to our fall season with both programs."

With five players finishing in the top eight spots, Anderson claimed the championship by a comfortable 25-shot margin over runner-up Catawba. Limestone (B) finished four shots further back in third place, with Emmanuel claiming the fourth spot. Erskine finished fifth, while Belmont Abbey was sixth and Southern Wesleyan finished seventh.

Converse and Bob Jones University rounded out the nine team field, with Spartanburg Methodist fielding three players in the 36-hole event.

Freeman, who finished second to teammate Kate Hill a year ago, fired a two-day 6-over-par 150, while leading the field with 25 pars during the tournament. Catawba's Sandra Brink finished second after carding a two-round 152. Trojan sophomore Kerington Lamb, who led after Monday's first round, slipped into a tie for third place with AU freshman Emma Charles. Trojan sophomore Victoria Hall, who shaved six strokes off Monday's opening round, and Limestone's Lisa Sevenius were six shots off the pace and shared fifth place.

Anderson senior Kate Hill, who led the tournament with five birdies over two rounds, carded a two-day 157 and finished in eighth place. Freshman Taylor Palmer posted 23 pars during the tourney and finished in a tie for 18th.

Following a four-week layoff, the Trojans will get back in action at the Patsy Rendleman Invitational, which will be hosted by Catawba at the Country Club of Salisbury.
