SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Anderson University duo of incoming freshman Emma Charles and rising sophomore Victoria Hall teamed up to win the 42ND Carolinas Women's Four-Ball Championship, Tuesday on 6,162 yard, par-72 Carolina Country Club layout.
Rising junior Anna Freeman and rising sophomore Kerington Lamb combined to finish in a tie for eighth place in the 13-team field.
Charles and Hall teamed up to take advantage of clutch putting to post a 4-under-par 68 in the first round to put them in a tie at the top of the leaderboard on Monday, then bettered their effort on Tuesday with a 6-under 66 to claim a 10-under total 134 and win by one shot over the pairing of Jessica Spicer and Sarah Spicer, who are both upperclassmen on the Virginia Tech women's golf team.
The tandems of Caroline Cahill (UNC Wilmington) and Natalie Peterson (Ga. Southern), along with Callista Rice (Clemson) and Kathryn Carson (E. Carolina) were each three shots further back in a tie for third place.
Hall and Charles combined to offset three bogeys during Monday's opening round with 11 birdies over the two-day tourney. Freeman and Lamb carded a two-day, 1-over-par 145 and shared the eighth spot with Channing Garnett (UNC Wilmington) and Mallory Fobes (UNC Wilmington).
The Carolinas Women's Four-Ball Championship, which began in 1978, is the oldest women's Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) championship. The championship is conducted at 36 holes of four-ball stroke play with a Championship Division and a Senior Division. The competition included gross scores only.
The Trojan women's golf team is scheduled to begin its fall slate at next month's AU Invitational at Cobb's Glen Country Club.
