WALLACE, N.C. – Behind a third-round effort that was the second-lowest score of the tournament, the Anderson women's golf team finished the regular season with a fourth-place finish at the Sunoco Campbell Oil Classic, which was hosted by UNC Pembroke at the 5,812 yard, par-72 River Landing Golf Club.
Lenoir-Rhyne won the 11-team event by 11 shots over the host Braves, while Wingate claimed third place. The Trojans built momentum for the postseason with their final-round score, which was just three strokes off the school-record 295 that they posted in the first round of the Pfeiffer Invitational earlier this month. Carson-Newman slipped from second place and finished fifth, with Mount Olive finishing sixth.
Lincoln Memorial, Catawba, Erskine, Mars Hill and Southern New Hampshire rounded out the field.
Wingate's Diana McDonald defeated Lenoir-Rhyne's Ainee O'Conner with a birdie on the first playoff hole to claim individual medalist honors after each carded identical 7-over-par 223s over the three rounds.
Junior Tiffany Elam fired an even-par 72 during the third round and jumped from a tie for 13th place into a share of sixth. Freshman Anna Freeman moved up one spot and claimed a share of eighth place, with sophomore Kate Hill taking home 12th place. Senior Riley Lovorn shared the 28th slot, while junior Samantha Ellison finished in a tie for 48th.
Next up for the Trojans is the South Atlantic Conference Championships, which will be hosted by Newberry, April 15-17, at the Members Club of Woodcreek in Columbia, S.C.
