Stingy Second Half Defense Lifts Trojans to Victory Over Newberry; 68-43

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Anderson University women's basketball team used stingy defense to lift them to victory over South Atlantic Conference opponent Newberry, 68-43, on Saturday afternoon Eleazer Arena.

With the win, Anderson improves to 16-8 overall and 10-6 in conference action while Newberry drops to 12-11 overall and 7-9 in SAC play.

Anderson placed three players in double-figures with junior Ace Easter scoring a team-high 16 points in 23 minutes of action. Easter shot a perfect 7-of-7 from the foul line and pulled down six rebounds. Forward Alexis Dillard netted 11 points pulling down eight rebounds while sophomore Madison Baggett chipped in 10 points while grabbing six boards in the Trojans win.

Newberry's Meg Essex was the lone player to reach double-figure scoring for the Wolves. Essex scored 13 of her game-high 17 points in the first half.  

Newberry won the first period of play, 17-15, only relinquishing the lead one time after sophomore Alexy Mollenhauer's made lay-up at the 5:13 mark. The Wolves pushed the lead to six before the Trojans cut the lead back to two after one period of action.  

The second period of action saw three ties and five lead changes before the Trojans claimed the 34-32 half-time lead. AU's sophomore Hannah Hodges tied the game on a lay-up with junior Erika Martin putting the Black and Gold ahead after a rebound and put back.

Stingy second half defense by the Black and Gold led Anderson to outscoring the Wolves 34-11 in second half action putting the game away and completing the season sweep over Newberry.
