Balanced Attack Lifts Trojans over Newberry; 71-51

 

ANDERSON, S.C. – With four players reaching double-figures in the scoring column and shooting 56.3 percent from long range, the Anderson women's basketball team won its second straight contest by defeating Newberry, 71-51, in South Atlantic Conference play Wednesday night at the Abney Athletic Center.

With the victory, Anderson moves to 8-3 overall and 3-1 in SAC play while the Wolves drop to 5-5 overall and 1-3 in conference action.

Sophomore Alexy Mollenhauer scored a team-high 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting including 3-of-4 from behind the arc. Sophomore Madison Baggett netted 16 points which included four 3-pointers while junior Ace Easter scored 15 points while grabbing four rebounds. Graduate student Alexis Dillard recorded her fifth double-double of the season chipping in 10 points and ripping down 11 rebounds for the Black and Gold.

Capping off the Trojans' scoring senior Kaylee Koerperich (6), junior Erika Martin (2) and sophomore Makayla Green (2).

Newberry placed one player in double-figures with Meg Essex earning a double-double with a game-high 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Wolves.

The only lead that Newberry claimed was the opening basket of the game. The Wolves did manage to pull within one late in the third quarter. However, the Trojans were able to close out the period with a six-point advantage, 55-49, after AU's Green converted two foul shots.

Anderson forced six of the Wolves 19 turnovers in the final period only allowing one basket for the entire frame to claim its second straight SAC win.

Head Coach Jonathon Barbaree's Thoughts: "Great team win tonight. Defensively, I am really proud of our girls in the fourth quarter. We have to continue to play defense that way all game. We have one more game to play before break and we need to get our minds right and be prepared to play on Saturday"
