Trojans Split Twin Bill at Catawba

Catawba, N.C. - Anderson University Softball split its twin bill at South Atlantic Conference opponent Catawba, dropping game one, 4-2, and winning game two, 5-0, on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Trojans improve to 14-2 overall and 5-1 in the SAC, while the Indians fall to 12-2 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

"The first game we didn't execute with runners in scoring position when we needed it," said head coach Tommy Hewitt. "That was the difference."  

"Game two, Morgan Charter tore it up going 2 for 4 with 2 home runs and 4 RBI," said Hewitt. "Harlie also pithed really well."  

Game 1 Summary

The Indians took the early lead, 2-0, after two innings of play. Anderson cut the lead in half after scoring one run in the third inning. Catawba added two more in the fourth inning, with AU scoring its final run in the fifth.

Catawba narrowly outhit Anderson 8-7, while both teams left seven runners stranded.

Senior Sarah Middleton (1-1) got the nod for game one, pitching 3.1 innings. Middleton gave up seven hits and four runs, while striking out five. Freshman Laken Maxwell was called in, pitching the final 2.2 innings. Maxwell gave up just one hit, while striking out three batters.

Game 2 Summary
Anderson 5       Catawba 0

The Trojans jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and added two more runs in the seventh inning. Solid defence and pitching held the Indians scoreless in game two to pick up the split. Senior Harlie Duncan (7-0) scattered eight hits, while striking out seven batters.

Junior Morgan Charter offered the heroics in game two, drilling two home runs and driving in four of the five runs scored. Senior Mattie Hamilton, freshman Hannah Whitaker and junior Gracie Williams each collected two hits for the Trojans.

Anderson returns home to host nonconference opponent Walsh on Monday. First-Pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 pm.
