Softball Splits with Catawba on the Road

SALISBURY, N.C. – Anderson University softball split a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader road contest dropping game one, 8-7, in extra inning while winning game two, 5-4, on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field.

With the split, the Trojans move to 20-14 overall and 4-6 in conference action while the Indians move to 17-14 overall and 5-5 in SAC play.

Game One    Catawba 8    Anderson 7 (9 innings)

The Black and Gold carried a 4-1 lead through three innings of play before giving up three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Trojans responded with two runs in the top of the fifth holding the Indians scoreless in their half of the fifth and sixth innings, before mounting their comeback with a two-run seventh inning.

The Trojans and Indians traded run in the eighth with Catawba holding Anderson scoreless in the top half of the ninth. Catawba was able to push across the winning run to take game one, 8-7.

Notables

Junior Mattie Hamilton batted 3-for-4 with four RBI while freshman Morgan Charter batted 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Seniors Kasey Grant and Joshlyn Martin each picked up two hits for the Black and Gold.

Game Two    Anderson 5   Catawba 4

The Indians scored a lone run in the second inning holding a 1-0 lead until the Trojans exploded for three runs in the top half of the fifth inning. Catawba answered back in the bottom half to reclaim the lead, 4-3.

Anderson scored two times in the top of the seventh using a couple of singles and an Indian miscue to claim game two, 5-4.

Notables

Charter, Martin and Grant led the way with two hits apiece collecting a combined six of the eight credited hits.

Sophomore Harlie Duncan (12-4) gave up five hits while striking out five batters.

Anderson remains on the road to play nonconference opponent Winston-Salem State on Sunday. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 pm.
