Trojans Split Doubleheader Road Contest at Queens

 

CHARLOTTE, N.C- The Anderson University softball team bounced back from a game one defeat to salvage a South Atlantic Conference split at Queens dropping game one, 5-2, while winning the nightcap, 10-2, on Saturday afternoon at Park Road Park.

With the split, Anderson moves to 28-12 overall and 10-6 in SAC play while the Royals move to 32-12 overall and 8-8 in conference action.

Game #1

Queens 5, Anderson 2

Queens used a four run third inning while tacking on a lone run in the fifth inning to defeat the Trojans, 5-2.

Anderson was able to cut the lead in half scoring two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Senior Rachael Barefield led the inning off with a walk. With one out, sophomore Meghan Majeski singled to left field setting up senior Cailah Niles to rip a two RBI double down the left field line.

The Royals were able to shut the Black and Gold down over the final two innings to secure the victory.

Anderson senior Randee Bettis (6-5) only gave up four hits, however the most crippling hit was a grand slam in the bottom of the third. Bettis walked three batters while striking out four in her six innings of work.

Queens Courtney Pearson (14-7) tossed 7.0 innings giving up six hit while striking out nine batters.

Game #2

Anderson 10, Queens 2 (6 innings)

Anderson jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after one complete inning. Niles led the inning off with a walk while junior Joshlyn Martin rip the two-run home run.

The Royals cut the lead in half scoring a lone run it the third inning, 2-1.

The Black and Gold answered back with two in the fourth and four in the fifth to take an 8-1 lead. With junior Kasey Grant reaching on a bunt single and Martin's double down left field line, junior Breanna Hagerty's 3-run home run gave the Trojans a seven run cushion.

Queens was able to score a run in the fifth inning with Anderson tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth inning on Martin's second home run of the day. The Trojans held the Royals claiming the shortened game due to the run-rule, 10-2.

Freshman Harlie Duncan (13-3) picked up her 13th win of the season giving up five hits while striking out seven.

Queens Shannon McGuire (13-3) suffered the loss pitching 4.1 inning giving up seven hits and three walks. Ali Celiberti pitched 1.2 innings giving up three hits and three runs for the Royals.

NOTABLES

  • Martin batted 3-for-4 in game two with a double, two home runs and five RBI.  
  • Freshman Mattison Cantrell went 1-for-2 in game two with a two RBI double.
  • Sophomore Meghan Majeski batted 4-for-6 on the day with two runs scored.
  • Niles went 2-for-3 in game one with a double and two RBI.
