Trojans Sweep Nonconference Opponent Belmont Abbey

BELMONT, N.C. The Anderson University softball team wrapped up its final game before diving into South Atlantic Conference action on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep over Belmont Abbey. The Trojans won game one, 12-0 (5 innings), while coming from behind to win the nightcap, 6-3 on Thursday afternoon at Crusader Field.

GAME #1

INSIDE THE BOX

Leading the Trojans at the plate, sophomore Meghan Majeski went 2-for-3 scoring three runs. Juniors Joshlyn Martin and Kasey Grant each batting 2-for-4 with a double apiece. Grant also tacked on a two-run home run to run her RBI count to four for the game. Senior Rachael Barefield drilled a grand slam over the centerfield fence for her second home run of the season.

Anderson's Harlie Duncan (8-1) pitched 5.0 innings giving up just three hits. Duncan forced 12 grounds outs for the game, walked one while striking out one.

Belmont Abbey's Helm (3-7) suffered the loss giving up five hits and seven runs before being lifted after 2.1 innings pitched. Watkins pitched the final 2.2 innings giving up five hits and five runs to the Black and Gold.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Anderson jumped out early producing a run in the top of the first inning. Majeski led off with a bunt single and stole second. Martin stepped in hitting her ninth double of the season, driving in Majeski for the early, 1-0, lead.

The Trojans blew the game open in the top of the third inning highlighted by Grant and Barefield's home runs. Grant's third home run of the season put the Trojans up 3-0 while Barefield's grand slam pushed the lead to 8-0.

Anderson pushed across four more runs in the top of the fifth inning using three singles, a walk and a double.

Anderson 6, Belmont Abbey 3

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Sophomore Mattie Hamilton batted 2-for-3 while Majeski picked up two hits in four at-bats. Martin continued to swing a hot bat (1-for-2) ripping a double to right field while senior Trudi Shuman also hit a double on her 1-for-2 outing.

Senior Randee Bettis (5-2) got the nod in game two for the Trojans pitching 7.0 innings. Bettis gave up eight hits, walked two and struck out three while picking up her fifth win of the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Belmont Abbey took a 3-1 lead after two innings of play. Anderson got a run back in the top of the fifth on senior Cailah Niles sacrifice fly scoring Shuman, 3-2.

The Black and Gold earned two more runs in the top of the sixth inning using a hit-by-pitch, a single and a throwing error to take the lead for good, 4-3.

Anderson tacked on two insurance runs in top of the seventh after Martin doubled and junior Breanna Hagerty homered to left field to set the final score at 6-3.

AU has won four straight with 3-of-4 being run ruled games.

UP NEXT

Anderson opens up its conference slate at home against SAC foe Coker on Saturday. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m.
