ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson University softball team split a nonconference doubleheader with Peach Belt Conference member Georgia College falling in game 1, 5-3, while winning the nightcap, 5-0 on Sunday afternoon at the AU Softball Complex.

INSIDE THE BOXES
Five different Trojans picked up a hit to account for the five hits in game 1. Junior Breanna Hagerty's hit made the most noise as she ripped a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to pull the Trojans within one run, 3-2. Junior Kasey Grant tripled with sophomore Meghan Majeski, sophomore Mattie Hamilton and freshman Abigail Webb each singled.
Senior Randee Bettis got the nod in game one pitching five innings. Bettis gave up five hits, five walks while striking out three before being lifted in favor of freshman Kayla Pepper. Pepper pitched the final two innings giving up three hits and two earned runs. Pepper was tagged with her second loss of the young season.
Georgia College's Kayla Price toed the rubber for game one pitching five innings. Price gave up four hits while striking out two. Price was relieved in the sixth inning by Becca Meade pitching 1.1 innings before being lifted in favor of Rebecca Lawrence for the final two outs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The scored remained scoreless through four innings of play until the Bobcats broke the stalemate in the top of the fifth inning. Georgia College sent nine batters to the plate scoring three runs. Anderson answered back in its half of the inning. Junior Joshlyn Martin reached on an error followed by Hagerty's two-run blast to left to cut the lead to, 3-2. AU's Hamilton reached on an infield single with pinch hitter Rachael Barefield reaching first on a hit-by-pitch. With one out, the Bobcats were able to work out of the jam using a line-out double-play.
The Trojans scored again in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game at 3-3. Grant tripled down the right field line followed by Majeski's RBI single. With runners on first and third, Hagerty hit a fly ball to right field that was just shy of being deep enough to score the runner from third. Hamilton rips a climbing line drive that is just in reach of the outstretched hand the shortstop to end the inning.
With two outs in the top of the seventh, Georgia College's Price hit a two-run home run to give the Bobcats a, 5-3, lead with three outs remaining for the Trojans.
Anderson rallied in its final at-bat, with one out pinch hitter Abi Webb singled followed by a walk being issued to designated player Khloe Saunders. Grant was hit-by-pitch with the Bobcats retiring Majeski. Martin hits a solid shot to center to but the Bobcats were able to secure the final out.

INSIDE THE BOX
Leading the Trojans at the plate, Hagerty batted 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI while Webb went 2-for-3 with a couple of singles.
Freshman Harlie Duncan (5-1) pitched five innings giving up just two hits while striking out three. Pepper was called in pitching the final two innings giving up zero hits and picking up her first career save for the Black and Gold.
Georgia College's Rebecca Lawrence (0-1) was tagged with the loss pitching six innings. Lawrence gave up nine hits while walking two.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Trojans broke the ice scoring in the bottom half of the third. Grant and Hamilton hit back-to-back doubles giving Anderson a 1-0 lead.
Solid pitching by the Trojans and another two-run blast by Hagerty put the Black and Gold up 3-0 after five complete innings.
Anderson tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning to set the final score for game 2 at 5-0.
ANDERSON STAT OF THE WEEK
Hagerty batted 13-for-23 (.565) with four home runs and 11 RBI. The junior infielder currently leads the South Atlantic Conference in home runs on the year with six.
UP NEXT
The Trojans remain home to host nonconference opponent Clark Atlanta on Sunday, Feb. 25. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
