Softball Wins Game Two to Split with Lees-McRae

ANDERSON, S.C. – The Anderson University softball team claimed victory in the nightcap to avoid the doubleheader sweep versus nonconference opponent Lees-McRae losing game 1, 1-0, and winning game 2, 5-4, on Tuesday afternoon at the AU Softball Complex.

INSIDE THE BOX

Leading the Trojans at the plate, junior Joshlyn Martin went 2-for-3 with two singles. Senior Cailah Niles, junior Breanna Hagerty and sophomore Meghan Majeski each picked up a single for the Trojans.

Senior Randee Bettis (1-1) suffered the loss in just two inning of work. Bettis gave up no hits but walked four batters in the top-half of the second inning giving up one run. Freshman Kayla Pepper pitched five innings of relief giving up four hits, no runs while striking out four Bobcats.

Lees-McRae's Kara Cunningham (1-0) went the distance pitching seven complete innings. Cunningham gave up five hits while striking out seven batters to pick up her first win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Lees-McRae used four second inning walks to push across the lone run of the game.

The Trojans best opportunity came in the bottom of the fourth inning. Anderson had the bases loaded with no one out before Cunningham sat down the Black and Gold in order to end the threat.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Leading the Trojans at the plate, was Niles and Hagerty each going 2-for-2. Niles ripped her second home run of the season while Hagery singled twice with an RBI. Martin stayed hot batting 2-for-4 with two doubles while junior Kasey Grant went 1-for-2 with a bunt single.

Freshman Harlie Duncan (4-0) got the nod in game two for the Trojans pitching seven innings scattering seven hits while striking out four.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Anderson took the early lead in the bottom of the first using sophomore Meghan Majeski's leadoff single and Niles two-run blast to claim the 2-0 lead. Lees-McRae cut the lead in half on Katie Robinson's solo shot in the top of the second inning.

The Bobcats came unglued in the bottom of third giving up a double, single, two errors and a hit-by-pitch to help the Trojans tack on three more runs to claim the 5-1 lead.

Lees-McRae was able to push another run across in the top of the fifth inning with Duncan working out of the jam. The Bobcats were able to keep the Trojans off the board giving themselves a last ditch effort in the seventh inning.

AU's Duncan retired the first batter of the seventh inning before two walks, a double and an unassisted put-out at first pulled the Bobcats within one, 5-4. Duncan stayed poised striking out the next batter to earn her fourth win of the season.

The Trojans travel to nonconference opponent Limestone on Thursday. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
