Trojans Win Two on the Road at Newberry

ANDERSON, S.C.-The Anderson University softball team won two South Atlantic Conference road games handing the Wolves their first losses of the season in conference action taking game 1, 3-0 and winning the night cap, 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at the Smith Road Complex.

NOTES
• The Trojans improve to 25-7 overall and 5-1 in conference action.
• Newberry drops to 21-10 overall and 4-2 in the SAC.

NOTABLES
• Sophomore Breanna Hagerty batted 3-for-6 on the day with and RBI.
• Sophomore Kasey Grant collected three hits on the day while stealing two bases.
• Junior Cailah Niles and Sophomore Michaela Smith each went 2-for-6 on the day with Smith recording two RBI. Niles drilled her ninth double of the season and Anderson's 44th of the year.

PITCHING
Pena (11-2) pitched a complete game shut-out earning her 11th win of the season. Pena gave up only four hits while striking out nine.

Newberry's Devon Morrison (12-4) toed the rubber for the Wolves in a complete game effort. Despite striking out eight, Morrison gave up eight hits and walked three Trojans in her fourth loss.

GAME 1
Anderson 3, Newberry 0

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Trojans used a leadoff walk to begin the game to score the first run of the game. With two outs in the top of the first, Hamilton's single to leftfield scored Meghan Majeski from third.
• Anderson held Newberry scoreless for the game.
• The Black and Gold added a single run in both the top of the fourth and top of the sixth to set the final score at 3-0.

GAME 2
Anderson 3, Newberry 2

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Anderson again scored early to take a 1-0 when Niles doubled to score Grant after she reached on a bunt single.
• The Trojans were able to tack on another run in the top of the fourth with the Wolves still scoreless through five innings of play.
• With one out in the top of the sixth, Hagerty drove in Hamilton who reached on a walk to push the lead to 3-0.
• The Wolves stayed on the prowl making the game very interesting during the bottom half of the sixth inning, crossing the plate twice to pull within a run, 3-2.
• The Black and Gold went down in order in the top of the seventh.
• Newberry was not able to use a one-out singles losing its first conference game of the year.

PITCHING
Senior Lauren Rudesheim (9-3) claimed her ninth win of the season after six innings of work. Rudesheim gave up six hits and struck out five Wolves. Pena was called in to complete the game earning her fourth save of the year.

Newberry's Emily Marchbanks (8-6) took the tough loss pitching seven innings while giving up five hits and striking out five batters.

ANDERSON STAT OF THE DAY
Hamilton has reached base in 29 straight games.

UP NEXT
• Anderson remains on the road to continue its six-game road swing when it travels to nonconference opponent Winston-Salem State on Sunday. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for Noon.
