Softball Splits Home Contest with North Greenville

ANDERSON, S.C. – The Anderson University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with North Greenville winning game one, 4-3 while dropping the nightcap, 4-1 Thursday afternoon at the AU Softball Complex.

GAME #1

Anderson 4, North Greenville 3

INSIDE THE BOX

Leading the Trojans at the plate, freshman Mattie Hamilton went 4-for-4 with three singles and a double. Hamilton also scored two runs while driving in two runs. Senior Augie Pena batted 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.

Pena (3-0) pitched five and a third innings giving up five hits, two which were solo shots while pitching a no-decision. Junior Randee Bettis was called in during the top half of the sixth inning with the score 2-2. The Georgia native allowed two hits and one run while holding the Crusaders at bay to pick up her third win of the season.

North Greenville's Amanda Coffrin (3-4) suffered the loss giving up 10 hits while striking out seven.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Trojans jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single, scoring freshman Meghan Majeski from second who reached on a hit up the middle, then stole second. Sophomore Brenna Hamilton scored the second run of the game after reaching first on a shot down the left field line. Pena's double scored Hamilton putting the Trojans on top 2-0 with three innings to play.

The Crusaders tied the game after solo shots by Shayna Finley in the top of the fifth inning and Megan Johnson in the top half of the sixth.

North Greenville took the lead in the top of the seventh after the leadoff walk scored on a two-out infield hit.

The Black and Gold responded by also taking advantage of a one-out walk to senior Courtney Czentnar later scoring the tying run on Hamilton's two-out RBI double. Hamilton scored the game-winning run after the Crusader's infield misplayed Pena's high pop up to first base.

GAME # 2

North Greenville 4, Anderson 1

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Leading the Trojans at the plate, was junior Cailah Niles going 1-for-1 while drawing two walks. Sophomore Kasey Grant batted 2-for-4 with a double and a single.

Senior Lauren Rudesheim (3-1) got the nod in game two for the Trojans pitching 5.2 innings, giving up seven hits and three runs. Bettis was called in again during the nightcap pitching 1.1 inning giving up two hits and a run to the Crusaders.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Anderson once again took the early lead in the bottom of the first, 1-0, on an RBI double by Czentnar scoring Majeski from second. The Black and Gold could not push anymore runs across stranding six runners on base.

North Greenville used a big sixth inning to score three runs while tacking on one more in the top of the seventh setting the final score, 4-1.

ANDERSON STAT OF THE DAY

Majeski is 11-for-11 in stolen bases swiping two bags today. As a team, the Trojans have not been caught stealing, 23-of-23, this season.

The Trojans return home Saturday to host non-conference opponent Johnson C. Smith. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for Noon.
