Softball Picks up Two Wins at Augusta

ANDERSON, S.C. – The Anderson University softball team picked up two non-conference wins in a doubleheader sweep winning game one, 2-0 and winning the nightcap, 5-4 on Sunday afternoon at Jaguar Field.

GAME #1

Anderson 2, Augusta 0

INSIDE THE BOX

Leading the Trojans at the plate, freshman Mattie Hamilton went 1-for-2 a double what turned out to be the game winning RBI. Sophomores Michaela Smith and Kasey Grant each recorded a hit while scoring Anderson's two runs of the game.

Senior Lauren Rudesheim (3-0) picked up her third win of the season in six and a third innings of work. Rudesheim gave up four hits while striking out four. Pena was called upon to close out the final inning to preserve the win for the Black and Gold.

Augusta's Kristen Mills (0-1) suffered the loss in a solid outing for the Jaguars. Mills pitched a complete game giving up only three hits while striking out five.

HOW IT HAPPENED

In a pitcher's duel, Anderson was able to string together all three hits in the third inning. AU's Smith led off the inning with a single to left field. Grant followed with a bunt single moving Smith to second. Freshman Meghan Majeski's ground ball to short moved Grant to second and Smith to third. Senior Courtney Czentnar flied out to center field while Niles earned a free pass. With two outs, Hamilton ripped a double scoring both Grant and Smith for the only runs of the game.

GAME # 2

Anderson 5, Augusta 4

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Leading the Trojans at the plate, Majeski went 2-or-3 with two stolen bases and a run scored. Hamilton picked up a single in the sixth to go 1-for-2. Niles and Czentnar both hit home runs to aide in the game two victory.

Junior Randee Bettis (2-0) got the nod in game two picking up her second win of the year. Bettis was lifted after five complete innings in favor of Pena. Pena pitched the final two innings earning her second save of the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Anderson took advantage of a leadoff walk to Grant in the top of the first to take the early 1-0 lead while Augusta answered right back in the bottom half of the first, 1-1.

The Black and Gold added two more run in the third inning, 3-1, on a two-out blast by Czentnar scoring Majeski after she reach on a base hit to center field.

The Jaguars evened the score once again,3-3, in the bottom of the fifth inning using a single, triple and sacrifice fly.

The Trojans took a one run lead in their top half of the sixth inning with a solo shot by Niles while adding an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a wild pitch.

Augusta made things interesting, leading off the bottom of the seventh with a double moving to third on a single and eventually scoring on a ground ball to the right side. Pena was able to get Auburn Balcorta to ground out with the tying run on third ending the game.

ANDERSON STAT OF THE DAY

The last time Anderson started 8-0 was the 2013-14 season.

UP NEXT

The Trojans return home to host non-conference opponent North Greenville on Thursday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
