Softball Sweeps Southern Wesleyan in Season Opener

CENTRAL, S.C. – The Anderson softball team opened the season with a pair of non-conference wins against Southern Wesleyan winning the opener, 6-3, and the nightcap, 7-4, on Wednesday afternoon at Varsity Field.

Anderson moves to 2-0 overall while Southern Wesleyan falls to 0-2 on the young season.

GAME #1

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Leading the Trojans at the plate, freshman Meghan Majeski batted 3-for-4 with three singles and a stolen base. Sophomore Michaela Smith went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI while sophomore Kasey Grant picked up two hits in four at-bats, scoring a run and driving in a run for the Trojans.

Senior Lauren Rudesheim got the nod in game one pitching five complete innings picking up her first win of the 2017 season. Rudesheim gave up seven hits, three runs while striking out one. Senior Augie Pena pitched two innings in relief striking out the first three batters she faced. Pena faced eight batters giving up two hits while striking out four on her way to her first save of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Southern Wesleyan got on the board first in the bottom half of the first inning, 1-0. Anderson answered right back exploding for five runs in the top of the second, taking advantage of three hits, three walks and an error.

The Warriors bats came alive in the bottom of the fourth picking up two runs on four hits to cut the lead to 5-3. The Trojans were able to tack on another run in the top half of the fifth, 6-3. With one out, freshman Ali Anderson was hit by a pitch advancing to second on an error. Sophomore Michaela Smith ripped a single scoring Anderson from second, setting the final score, 6-3.

Southern Wesleyan's hurler Lucy Wolf (0-1) pitched a complete game, giving up nine hits, striking out one in her first loss of the season.

GAME #2

Anderson 7, Southern Wesleyan 4

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Junior Cailah Niles led the way in game two going 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI while Majeski bat remained hot batting 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

Junior Randee Bettis (0-0) made the start and pitch 4 complete innings before being lifted with the Trojans down 2-1. Pena (1-0) pitched the final three innings picking up her first win of the season. The senior hurler, gave up two hits striking out three of the twelve batters she faced.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Anderson took advantage of a lead-off walk in the top of the first to jump out in front, 1-0. Despite putting together back to back singles, the Warriors were able to limit the damage to just one run.

Southern Wesleyan responded in the bottom of the first with two runs after a lead-off walk, a double and two singles, 2-1.

The Trojans broke the game open in the top half of the fifth inning scoring five runs on four straight hits, two walks and an error.

Hunter Hoski (0-1) suffered the loss giving up 10 hits and five runs in four innings of work.

Nine Trojans batters recorded at least one hit on the day.

NOTABLES

In her college debut, Majeski went 5-for-8, stole three bases, scored two runs and recorded an RBI.

Niles went 4-for-9 with two doubles and three RBI.

UP NEXT

The Trojans return home for a four-game home stand. The Black and Gold will play Conference Carolinas opponent Lees-McRae on Sunday. The first pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
