Men’s Cross Country Claims Third at Furman’s Gene Mullin Invitational

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Sophomore Deniz Hay claimed 12th place individually to lead the Anderson University men's cross country to a season's-best third-place finish at the 39th Gene Mullin Furman Cross Country Invitational Saturday morning.

Competing on a challenging course in a 12-team field that included five NCAA Division I teams, Hay (27:06) posted his third-best time of the season to cross the line ahead of all D-II runners.

Four Trojan runners finished in a group less than 16 seconds behind Hay's effort, with junior Matt Shaffer (27:17), sophomore Parks Edwards (27:21), sophomore Kyle Koby (27:21) and junior Alex Pena (27:25) placing 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st, respectively.

Freshman Josh Visi-Clark (28:30) earned 42nd, while junior Ryne Welch (29:21) crossed the line in the 50th spot.

Sophomore Matt Imes (29:42) and Drew Mahaffey (29:57) finished 55th and 58th to round out the Trojan contingent.

Anderson will have a two-week break before competing at the South Atlantic Conference Championships on Oct. 22 in Morristown, Tenn.
