Trojan Track and Field Wraps up 49er Classic with Strong Marks

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Anderson University men's and women's track and field teams opened their respective outdoor seasons this weekend at the Charlotte 49er Classic, which wrapped up Saturday afternoon at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Center.

After posting strong marks in the opening events on Thursday, freshman Katharine Landry claimed eighth place overall in the women's heptathlon. The Ashland, Mass., native claimed 11th place in the 100 meter hurdles and also finished 11th in the high jump. She finished third in the shot put and again claimed 11th place in the 200 meters on Thursday.

Landry won the javelin toss with a distance of 36.25 meters and finished eighth in the long jump with a distance of 4.90 meters, while crossing the finish line in eighth place in the 800 meters in a time of 2:36.68.

Sophomore Lydia Gambrell finished 53rd in the women's 800 meters in a time of 2:29.55, with classmate Natalie Ardis claiming 87th place in a time of 2:48.86. Gambrell (5:14.62) also captured 76th place in the 1,500 meters, while junior Emily Olson was 108th in a time of 5:42.97.

Sophomore Olivia Rish led four Trojans in the women's 5,000 meter run by finishing 16th in a time of 18:51.65. Sophomore Hannah Beach (19:17.09) and senior Martha Coleman (19:21.48) finished 25th and 27th, respectively. Freshman Melea Sangl was 37th in a time of 20:00.76.

Senior Madison Seay crossed the finish line in a time of 1:09.34 in the women's 400 meters and claimed 27th place, with senior JoLyn Copeland garnering 27th place with a distance of 31.53 meters in the discus throw. Copeland (34.72 meters) also finished 35th in the women's hammer throw.

On the men's side, Robert Jones finished sixth in the men's 100 meters in the early decathlon events and also claimed sixth in the long jump. He finished fourth in both the shot put and in the high jump and finished fifth in the 400 meters on Thursday.

Jones finished fifth overall in the decathlon after claiming fourth in the 1500 meters in a time of 5:10.87 and fourth in the pole vault with a height of 2.64 meters. He was second in both the discus throw with a distance of 26.18 meters and in the javelin throw with a distance of 41.60 meters.

Junior Jordan Anderson was 44th in the men's 200 meters in a time of 22.74 and also finished 44th in the 400 meters in a time of 52.29. Freshman Matthew Hobbs (23.60) finished 75th in the 200 meters. Sophomore Cameron Owens-Hunter claimed 29th place in the 800 meters in a time of 1:57.72 and captured 75th place in the 1,500 meters in a time of 4:11.92. Junior Luke Horne (4:12.77) crossed the finish line in 76th place in the 1,500 meters, while freshman Brandon Wilson was 111th in a time of 4:30.87.

Wilson finished 36th in the 3,000 meter run in a timer of 9:37.62, with David Rolon (9:45.06) and Hayden Tuten (9:52.46) finishing 37th and 39th, respectively.

Sophomore Joey Teachout finished 28th in the 5,000 meter run in a time of 15:43.11, with classmate Weston Hutto takin home 62nd place in a time of 16:59.44.

The freshman tandem of Thomas Sutcliffe (33:37.25) and Noah McLain (35:22.87) finished 14th and 23rd, respectively, in the 10,000 meter run.

Sophomore Philip Quillen was eighth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in a time of 9:45.60, with senior Anthony Aleruchi claiming 19th place in the discus throw with a toss of 41.72 meters. Freshman Scott Sanford (48.48 meters) finished 13th in the javelin throw.

The Trojans' outdoor season continues Friday at the Emory Invitational.
