Trojans Triumph Over Lees-McRae in Season Opener; 3-0

ANDERSON, S.C –Anderson University men's soccer used an early goal to propel them past nonconference opponent Lees-McRae, 3-0, in its season opener on Thursday evening at Trojan Stadium.

With the triumph, the Trojans move to 1-0 on the young season while Lees-McRae falls to 0-1.

In the fifth minute of action, junior Jhon Vaca won a loose ball and lifted it just over the keeper's outstretched hand to give the Black and Gold the early lead. Vaca's first career goal proved to be the lone goal of the half as well as the game-winner.

Anderson punched in its second goal just inside the 48th minute on a perfectly placed ball by senior Cameron Emerson to senior Gabriel Homem. In the 64th minute, Homem  returned the favor to junior Vinicius Veiga serving up a brilliant pass for Veiga to drill  past the Bobcats keeper putting an exclamation point on the match.

The Trojans outshot Lees-McRae 18-15 for the game with a 14-8 advantage in the second half. Anderson also edged out the Bobcats 6-4 in corner kicks.

Lees-McRae's Anton Sundstrom recorded seven saves on the night while AU's Gal Elyashiv was credited with three. Elyashiv's aggressive play in goal played a huge roll in the Trojans victory.

Anderson has won its past four season opener's while pushing it win streak to two over the Bobcats.

The Trojans will travel to nonconference opponent Lander on Wednesday. Kick-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
