Men’s Golf in 10th Place after Day One of South Atlantic Conference Championships

CAMDEN, S.C. – Paced by junior Jake Miller's 3-over-par 73, the Anderson men's golf team is in 10th place following opening-round action Sunday at the 2019 South Atlantic Conference Championship, which is being hosted by Coker on a on a par-70, 6,455-yard Camden Country Club layout.

With five teams from the SAC in the top-50 in the latest Golfstat NCAA Division II National Rankings, No. 33 Newberry leads the host Cobras by six shots entering Monday's second round. The Wolves have captured three league championships - most recently in 2011. No. 38 Queens is in third place, nine strokes off the pace, with 10th-ranked Lincoln Memorial four strokes further back in fourth place.

Tusculum holds the fifth slot and Catawba is sixth, while Wingate and 14th-ranked Carson-Newman are seventh and eighth, respectively. Lenoir-Rhyne, Anderson and Mars Hill round out the 11-team field.

Newberry's Harry Bolton fired a 4-under-par 66 and leads teammate Adrian Villiger and Queens' Henry Bryden by two shots following Sunday's first-round action. Five additional golfers are just three shots off the pace.

Miller is in a four-way tie for 20th, while classmate Drake McAlister carded a 6-over 76 and is tied for 31st place. Junior Brady Cox shares 46th place after posting a 79 and senior Hunter Parks is just behind in a tie for 49th place after carding an 80. Senior Cole Jefferys (83) rounds out the Trojan contingent in a tie for 54th place.

Monday's second round of the 54-hole tournament is slated to get underway at 8:30 a.m.
