ANDERSON, S.C. – Sophomore Jake Miller carded an even-par 72 on Monday and continues to lead the chase for individual medalist honors, as the Anderson men's golf team is tied for sixth place following second-round action at the 2018 South Atlantic Conference Championship. The Trojans are hosting the three-round event at the par-72, 7,002 Cobb's Glen Country Club.
With the 11-team field playing under overcast skies and a cold drizzling rain for much of the morning, Carson-Newman moved up a pair of spots by posting the third-lowest round of the tournament to claim first place by one stroke over Newberry. The Wolves began the day in sixth place, but vaulted into second place on the strength of 1-under-par 71s from seniors Carlos Leandro and Spencer Skiff.
Wingate moved up three slots into third place and is just three shots off the pace set by Carson-Newman, while trailing Newberry by only two shots heading into Tuesday's final round. Queens is in fourth place, while 16th-ranked Lincoln Memorial is two strokes further back in fifth place. Lenoir-Rhyne and the host Trojans share sixth place, while Coker, Catawba, Mars Hill and Tusculum finished out the standings after day two.
Miller, who is 5-under-par after two rounds, is bidding to become AU's first SAC Tournament MVP since the Trojans joined the league in 2011. Mars Hill's Harry Butler and Queens' Henry Bryden are three shots off the pace. Carson-Newman's Tom Forster is in fourth place, while Newberry's Carlos Leandro and Wingate's Tim Bombosch are at even-par after the second round.
The freshman tandem of Cal Brock and Colt Martin are tied for 20th and 43rd, respectively, while junior Hunter Parks shares 47th place. Junior Grayson Bell is alone in 49th place.
The third and final round is slated to get underway, Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.
