Young Leads Trojans Past Erskine

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Brandon Young scored 21 points, 18 in the second half, to lead Anderson University to a 72-65 victory over Erskine in a Conference Carolinas game Thursday night at the Abney Center. After trailing by as seven points in the first half, Anderson, 5-6 overall and 3-1 in the conference, batted back to take a 30-29 at the break. Stephen Cobb's basket with 15 seconds remaining was the 14th lead change of the first half and gave the Trojans the lead for good. Anderson opened the second half with a 21-7 run for a 51-36 lead with 10:36 to play. Young made five 3-point goals during the run. Another 3-point goal by Young and a basket by Cobb gave Anderson its largest lead of 18 points -- 61-43 -- with 7:58 remaining. From that point, the Fleet, 1-8 and 1-4, started chipping away. Anderson struggled at the free throw line late, which allowed Erskine to get as close as four points -- 69-65 -- with 28 seconds remaining. Young, a sophomore from Belmont, N.C., was 7-for-13 from the field and 7-for-10 from behind the arc. He also had six rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Nick Trull added 13 points and Cobb chipped in 12 for the Trojans. Erskine was led by Brandon Wright with 22 points, Nathan Jones with 13 points, and Jay Boulware with 12 points. Anderson shot 50 percent from the field (10-20) in the second half to finish the game at 39 percent. Erskine failed to shoot better than 40 percent in either half and finished the game at 34 percent. Anderson was 11-for-22 from behind the arc, while Erskine was 6-for-30. Anderson made 7 of 9 from behind the arc in the second half. Led by Trey Britton and Trull, who had eight rebounds apiece, Anderson won the boards, 47-42. Boulware was the game's leading rebounder with 16. Both teams suffered just 10 turnovers.
