Cheer Team Earns Athletic Department’s Highest Academic Honor

ANDERSON, S.C. – For the first time since the award's inception in 2007, the Anderson University cheerleading team has edged the women's tennis squad for top academic honors following the spring semester, as announced by the department on Thursday afternoon.

The 2017-18 academic year featured back-to-back semesters of firsts, as the men's tennis team broke through in the fall semester to become the first men's team in the 12-year history of the award to post the department's highest GPA after the women's cross country squad claimed the accolade for a departmental-record eighth time a year ago. The AU cheerleading squad posted a stellar 3.564 GPA for the spring semester, which eclipsed the women's tennis squad's 3.496 mark.

The Dr. Shirley Jacks Award is given to the team that possesses the highest grade point average at the end of each semester and the cheer team will be presented the trophy at an athletic event during the fall.

Nearly every team achieved at least a 3.0 GPA for the semester.
