Trojans Split SAC Doubleheader with No. 22 Wingate

ANDERSON, S.C. – Using a five-run fifth inning in the nightcap, the Anderson University baseball team bounced back from a 13-2 loss to Wingate in the opener of a South Atlantic Conference twin bill to claim a 5-4 win in the nightcap, Sunday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.

Anderson moved to 15-23 overall and 8-13 in the conference with its fourth win in six outings, while Wingate fell to 30-11 and 14-7.

Junior Jackson Strange had three of the Trojans' four hits, with a single, a double and a solo home run in the ninth inning.

Junior right-hander Will Gee (2-6) suffered the loss after surrendering four runs on nine hits, while striking out five and walking two in 4 1/3 innings of work.

Game #2
Anderson 5, Wingate 4
Senior William Thomas posted a two-run double in the decisive fifth inning, while junior hurler Christian Hendrix earned the victory – his second of the week – after limiting the Bulldogs to a pair of runs on four hits, while striking out one and walking one in 2 2/3 innings of work. Junior Matthew Stanley earned his fourth save of the season with 1 1/3 innings of relief. The left-hander allowed one hit and struck out three batters.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
Wingate posted a pair of runs in the first inning and again in the second frame and built a 6-0 lead with two more in the sixth inning, while putting the game out of reach with seven runs in the seventh inning.

Game 2
The Bulldogs jumped on top with a pair of runs in the second inning and added another run in the top of the fifth, before the Trojans sent 11 batters to the plate and exploded for five runs in the bottom of the inning.

Wingate trimmed the lead to one with a run in the sixth and had the tying run at third with one out in the top of the ninth, but Stanley fanned the final two Bulldog batters to preserve the win.

Anderson is scheduled to open a four-game road swing at Lander on Tuesday. First-pitch in Greenwood, S.C. is set for 6 p.m.
