Trojans Drop Twin Bill to Alabama Huntsville

EMERSON, Ga. – The Anderson University baseball team dropped a nonconference doubleheader to Alabama Huntsville, falling 9-5 in the opener and dropping an 8-6 decision in the nightcap, Friday at the Lake Point Baseball Complex.

Anderson slipped to 2-6 on the season after suffering its sixth consecutive setback, while Alabama Huntsville evened its record at 3-3 on the season with its third straight win.

Game #1
Alabama Huntsville 9, Anderson 5
Junior catcher Brandon Odachowski was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer in the top of the ninth, while sophomore Matthew Overton and sophomore Joseph Strange each hammered solo home runs in the eighth inning.

Junior right-hander Will Gee (1-1) got the start and suffered the loss after surrendering seven runs on three hits over 4 1/3 innings. He struck out five and walked three.

Game #2
Alabama Huntsville 8, Anderson 6
Freshman Chandler Castleberry was 1-for-3, with a three-run homer in the top of the second inning, while sophomore Alex Medlin added a pair of singles and scored twice in three trips to the plate. Freshman Will O'Brien was 2-for-3, with a single and an RBI-double in the fourth inning. Overton was 2-for-3, with a single and a double in the nightcap.

Sophomore Christian Carpenter (1-2) absorbed the loss after tossing 1 1/3 innings of relief and allowing two runs on two hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
The Chargers jumped ahead with three runs in the in the bottom of the first inning by taking advantage of a two-out, two-run homer. Jackson Strange got the Trojans on the scoreboard with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning that plated Dillon Carpenter, but Alabama Huntsville countered with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to build a 7-1 cushion and added solo runs in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings.

The Trojans rallied for four runs in the last two innings, but the deficit was too large to overcome. Overton and Joseph Strange led off the eighth inning with back-to-back solo home runs and Odachowski belted his two-run shot over the left-field fence with two outs in the top of the ninth.

Game 2
Odachowski lofted a sacrifice fly to center field that brought home Castleberry with the game's first run in the first inning and Castleberry's three-run homer in the top of the second frame gave the Trojans an early 4-0 advantage. But Alabama Huntsville responded with four runs in the bottom of the second inning that knotted the score.

Overton and Medlin led off the fourth inning with a double and a single, respectively, and both came around to score to give AU a 6-4 lead. The Chargers drew within one run by scoring once in the bottom of the inning and pulled ahead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

ANDERSON STAT OF THE DAY
After not recording a home run through the first six games, the Trojans erupted for four round-trippers in the doubleheader.

Chandler Castleberry extended his hitting streak to four games.
Matthew Overton has hit safely in three straight games.
• Castleberry has reached base in all eight games.
• Castleberry has drawn a team-high six walks on the season.
Tyler Miller leads the team with nine hits and five RBI on the season.

UP NEXT
AU opens a four-game homestand by playing host to Emmanuel on Tuesday, then welcomes South Atlantic Conference-foe Lenoir Rhyne to Anderson Memorial Stadium for a three-game weekend series.
