Four-Run Seventh Inning Lifts Southern Wesleyan over Trojans

ANDERSON, S.C. – The Anderson University baseball team rallied to tie the score in the sixth inning, but Southern Wesleyan answered with a big seventh inning to defeat the Trojans, 8-4, Wednesday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.

Anderson slipped to 2-4 on the season with its fourth straight setback, while Southern Wesleyan improved to 6-2 with its fourth consecutive win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Freshman Will Lindsay led the Trojans offense by going 3-for-4 on the afternoon, with a double and a pair of singles. The Hendersonville, N.C., native also drove in a run and scored once. Sophomore Dillon Carpenter added a single and walked twice, while crossing the plate once.

Sophomore right-hander Christian Carpenter (1-1) suffered the loss after allowing five runs on five hits, while striking out three and walking one in 2 2/3 innings of relief on the mound.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Southern Wesleyan pushed out to a 3-0 lead after posting solo runs in the first, fourth and sixth innings, while the Trojans rallied to knot the score with three runs in the bottom of the sixth frame.

AU sent eight batters to the plate in the sixth, with Dillon Carpenter leading off the home half of the inning with his second walk of the contest. One out later he moved into scoring position on a wild pitch and went to third when Jackson Strange singled through the left side. Freshman Brandon Odachowski followed with a single to right field that plated Dillon Carpenter. Later, with two outs, freshman Tyler Berry and Lindsey came up with clutch singles that brought home Strange and Odachowski with the tying runs.

But the Warriors answered quickly with four runs in the top of the seventh by also sending eight batters to the plate.

Southern Wesleyan added another run in the top of the ninth, with Lindsey leading off the bottom of the ninth with the first double of his collegiate career. He later scored, but the Trojans were unable to get any closer.

AU will travel to Alabama-Huntsville for the first time in school history this weekend. The Trojans and Chargers will square off in a Saturday afternoon doubleheader, set for a 2 p.m. first-pitch and will wrap up the three-game series on Sunday afternoon.
