Trojans Drop Conference Doubleheader to Tusculum

ANDERSON, S.C. – The Anderson University baseball team dropped a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader with Tusculum, falling, 14-6 and 12-5, Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.

Anderson fell to 8-23 overall and 4-11 in the conference, while Tusculum improved to 19-8 overall and 12-3 in the league with its 10th consecutive victory and claimed the top spot in the SAC standings.

Game #1
Tusculum 14, Anderson 6
Juniors Tyler Miller and William Thomas combined for four of the Trojans' eight hits in the opener, with Miller posting a double and a single and Thomas notching a triple and a single. Both players also scored once and drove in a run.

Sophomore John McMicking (1-5) took the loss after surrendering five runs on seven hits, while striking out one and walking three.

Game #2
Tusculum 12, Anderson 5
Freshman Dillon Carpenter was 2-for-4 in the nightcap, with a pair of singles in the nightcap. Senior Avery Sneed added two singles and Joseph Strange drove in a pair of runs with a second-inning single.

Junior Nick Contafio (0-2) absorbed the setback, while giving up a run in the fifth inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
After two innings, the Pioneers snapped a scoreless tie with a two-out run in the top of the third, while AU responded by taking advantage of three singles and a pair of Tusculum errors to score three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a two-run lead.

Tusculum knotted the score with a two-run fourth inning, with Anderson claiming a 4-3 lead with another solo run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Joseph Strange led off with a double and crossed the plate on Thomas' sacrifice fly to right field.

But the Pioneers countered with 10 runs over the next three innings to take a 13-4 lead, before AU posted a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth and Tusculum finished the scoring with a run in the top of the ninth.

Game 2
Tusculum struck first with a solo run in the top of the first inning, with Joseph Strange's two-run single highlighting a four-run second inning for the Trojans.

The Pioneers added three runs in the top of the third to even the score and edged out to a 5-4 lead in the fifth. Sneed posted a clutch two-out single in the bottom of the inning to plate Avery Green with the tying run, but Tusculum snapped the tie with a run in the sixth and added six runs in the top of the seventh.

UP NEXT
The Trojans will get back on the diamond Tuesday, when Erskine invades Memorial Stadium. First-pitch is set for 6 p.m.
