Trojans Snap Losing Streak

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Blair Carson's grand slam in the eighth inning proved to be the game winner as the Anderson University defeated Southern Wesleyan 8-5 in a non-conference game Wednesday night at Anderson Memorial Stadium. The Trojans got on the scoreboard first in the third inning on a two-run triple by Trent Still. The Warriors responded with on run in the fourth. Drew Sherwood led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, moved to third on a balk and scored on a ground ball to third by Kellen Kmiecik to cut the lead to 2-1. Anderson answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning when Derek Hipp and Don Ballard both scored on a Warrior error to extend the lead to 4-1. In the seventh, the Warriors scored one run on a triple by Kody Hightower to make it a 4-2 game. In the Anderson eighth, Walt Quattlebaum led off with a triple, Hipp was walked, and Alex Roberson was hit by a pitch to set the table for Carson. Carson's towering grand slam to left to gave the Trojans an 8-2 lead. Southern Wesleyan attempted a comeback by scoring three runs in the ninth, but Anderson held on to snap a six-game losing streak. Elliot Tolley earned the win for the Trojans, while Jason Garner was saddled with the loss for the Warriors. Kaleb Davis started the game for the Trojans and gave up no hits in three innings of work in his first appearance since Tommy John surgery on his elbow. Anderson was led offensively by Carson who was 2-for-5 with a double and a grand slam. Roberson contributed to the Trojan offense with two hits in three plate appearances. Dustin Smith led the Warriors by going 2-for-4 with a double. The win improves Anderson to 13-31. Southern Wesleyan is now 21-12.
