Carson-Newman Shuts Down Anderson, 6-1

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- Wes McIntyre and Jake McDonald combined to hold Anderson University to six hits to lead Carson-Newman to a 6-1 victory over the Trojans in a non-conference game Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles pounded out 11 hits to beat the Trojans for the second time in as many games. Carson-Newman (26-12) grabbed a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Senior Langdon Potts singled and scored to lead off, coming around on sophomore Derek Long's line-drive single to center. Long also scored on an RBI single by sophomore Corey Lamson, C-N's third single of the inning. McIntyre (5-0), the Eagles' starter, worked six innings, allowing five hits and one earned run. The Chattanooga native struck out three and recorded 10 fly-ball outs. McDonald tossed three scoreless innings to notch his first save of the season. The Eagles took advantage of a lead-off walk and Trojan mistakes to add a run to their lead in the third. Long drew a walk, and advanced to second a single to left by Nick Achberger. He would come in to score on back-to-back wild pitches by Anderson starter Luis Martinez, to push the Eagle lead to 3-0. Anderson would get one run back in the sixth. Second baseman Matt Hill lifted a McIntyre offering over the left field fence to cut the Eagles lead to 3-1. Jonathan McMahon's inside-the-park home run in the eighth highlighted three late insurance run for the Eagles. Leftfielder Josh Grubbs and Ryan Saxon both had two singles for the Trojans. Potts finished 2-for-3 with a double and two walks to lead C-N. Anderson, 12-27 overall, returns to action Friday at 3 p.m. when Erskine comes to Anderson Memorial Stadium for the first game of a three-game series.
