Trojans Beat Red Raiders, 5-2

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Anderson University used two runs in the seventh inning to beat Shippensburg 5-2 in the final game of the three-game series Sunday afternoon at Anderson Memorial Stadium. The Trojans got on the board first in the third inning when Patrick West doubled down the right field line and advanced to third on B.J. Smith's single to center. West scored on an arrant pickoff attempt. But the Raiders answered in the fourth with a lead-off triple by Kevin Miller. Kasey Kuhns followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 1. The Raiders added an unearned run in the top of the fifth to take a 2-1 lead. After a scoreless sixth, the Trojans scored two runs on three hits to take a 3-2 lead. The Trojans added two insurance runs in the eighth. Clint Neville led off with a single. Pinch-runner Nick Easterlin scored when the next batter -- Trent Still -- doubled down the right field line. Josh Grubbs pinch ran for Still and scored on Derek Hipp's squeeze bunt to increase the Anderson lead to 5-2. The Trojans were led offensively by Smith, who was 3-for-5 with a run scored, and by Hipp, who was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Justin Garber had two singles in four plate appearances, and Kyle Rhoads had three hit in four plate appearances for Shippensburg. Carson pitched seven innings to get the win. Cory Welch allowed only one hit in two innings for the save. Andrew Burke took the loss for the Raiders allowing three runs in 6 1/3 innings. Anderson improves to 5-13, while Shippensburg falls to 1-6. Anderson's next action will come Tuesday at 3 p.m. as they host North Georgia.
