Anderson Rally Falls Short Against Indians

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Brian Hatley came in to record the final out and Spence Southard provided what proved to be the winning run with a solo home run in the top of the ninth to lead Catawba to a 6-5 victory over Anderson College Wednesday afternoon at Anderson Memorial Stadium. Catawba, 16-9 overall, led 6-2 entering the bottom of the ninth, but Anderson put together a three-run rally with the help of Indian pitching. With one out, three straight Anderson batters walked to load the bases. Pinch runner Seth Thompson scored on a wild pitch, and Kyle Lewis and Cody Nye both scored on a single by Caleb Owen. But Owen's potential tying run was left stranded at first when Hatley entered to get a ground out to end the game. Catawba extended its lead to 5-2 in the eighth on an RBI single by Mark Smith that scored Nick Lefko. The loss drops Anderson to 6-15. The two teams will meet again at Catawba Thursday at 4 p.m.
